The story everyone asks about

Owen the hippo, and the century-old tortoise.

A baby hippo swept out to sea by the December 2004 tsunami was rescued on the Kenyan coast — and formed an unlikely, lasting bond with a giant male tortoise nearly a century old. Ecologists at the sanctuary describe the hippo, nicknamed Owen, treating the tortoise exactly as he would his own mother: following him everywhere, and turning protective if anyone gets too close.

You can meet them both at Bamburi Nature Trail (Haller's Park), included on our Mombasa city excursions.
